The buzz phrase has been sustainable fashion, and frankly for good reason. We have a lot of clothes. Ok, fine I will admit it, I have a lot of clothes. But I’m not quite ready for a capsule collection just yet (working on it). I’m also not ready to not have no new (to me) items. I’m still a work in progress, and I’m ok with that. But I have a genius hack my friends about how to be more sustainable in fashion, but also to get some new to you clothes (for free!). Take a look at your partner’s side of the closet. No really, here are 5 items you can borrow from your husband’s closet.

Before you say, but my husband’s clothes are gigantic and they won’t work. Lemme tell you – they will. There are some creative ways to make them work. Let me share!

1. When the Boyfriend Jeans are actually his

Remember how we’ve been told that the skinny jean is dead (spoiler alert, they aren’t)? Instead of buying a pair of oversized jeans which you may not love (yet), go and borrow a pair from the other side of the closet. Now I know, the waist on those jeans are probably massive right? I know they are for me when I borrow anything from my husband’s closet. I thought, no way will they fit. But with a couple of simple hacks, they end up being a perfect fit.

Style Hack: Jeans too long? Give them a roll. Waist much too big? Belt it or use the string hack as shown in the video.

How to Style: I love the versatility of oversized jeans. I love how I can just go with the whole look and continue with a more masculine look and pair some loafers and an over sized cardigan. Or go ultra feminine, and add some heels and a fitted blouse.

2. Cashmere Sweater

Cashmere is expensive, therefore you should get more wear out of it. That is the very definition of sustainable fashion. (Shhhh – it’s what I’m telling my husband ok?). This hack can work for any sweater, I’m personally a fan of borrowing his oversized hoodies.

Style Hack: An easy hack is to just to do tuck in the oversized sweater, and roll up the sleeves. I like having a more defined waist with an oversized item, so I would go for a jean or pant that is slightly higher waisted and even more lean in shape (ahem – like a skinny jean!)

How to Style: Let me count the ways – seriously. If you aren’t as tall as I am, and the sweater is almost mid thigh or longer then wear it as a sweater dress! Yes really! Add a belt if you need to cinch the waist, some tall boots, maybe pull the neck slightly off the shoulder and bam.

3. Graphic T-shirt

For some reason, I rarely buy myself fun graphic t-shirts. But sometimes a graphic t-shirt is what the outfit calls for (trust me on this.) This is the easiest thing to borrow from husband’s closet.

Style Hack: Similar to the cashmere sweater. Tuck it in or give it a tie to crop it.

How to Style: I love taking a graphic tee and pairing it with leather pants and heels for an edgy look. Or make it more girly and add your most feminine pretty skirt (like this one) with it.

4.A button down shirt

I’m actually not going to tell you to grab his white button down, which frankly is the classic go-to. It’s actually one of those items I’d highly suggest you own for yourself ( a true classic). But have fun with any other button down shirt of his.

Style Hack: This is pretty universal for anyone. A classic button down in any print or colour can go with pretty much anything and any look.

How to Style: I styled mine (I mean his), but leaving a few buttons undone at the bottom and then tying the ends and tucking them into my jeans. This way I am creating a more fitted silhouette around my waist. Then roll up the sleeves .

Still not working for you? Try it it as a shirt dress. You could cinch it in at the waist, or pair it with long boots a pair of stockings.

5. A blazer

I have to tell the truth here, this one almost didn’t work for me. I really wanted to achieve that oversized blazer look. But the size of the blazers were massive. I found one that had the least amount of should pads.

Style Hack: Think outside the box, if it’s much too large for you, then belt it at the waist! If you are more petite, you could even wear it as a blazer dress .

How to Style: Look for a blazer that doesn’t have huge shoulder pads. I personally don’t mind the look but my hsuband’s blazers are gigantic so I looked for one with minimal pads. Roll up the sleeves and cinch it at the waist. He was sweating a little with this look, but I told him that it was in the name of sustainable fashion!

Tell me in the comments, what would you borrow from your husband’s closet?
