I had finally splurged and gave into a trend a couple years ago and bought myself a pair of vegan leather pants from Aritzia. The Wilfred Daria pant from Aritzia retails for $138 CDN. Yep, for leggings. They aren’t inexpensive for fake leather (that’s what vegan means).
But the soft buttery feel of them, the long length for my tall frame, the fact that I felt like a #coolgirl, well that made it worth it. Except I rarely wore them. I didn’t want to stretch them out. I was “saving” them. Saving them for what? I’m not exactly sure, since they’d probably go out of style by the time I got my money’s worth from them.
Also, I’m trying to become a more conscious shopper, someone who gravitates towards more timeless items of clothing rather than fast fashion. I don’t want to fill the landfills up with clothing that I wasted money on. So I’m trying to apply the principle of ‘wearing an item of clothing at least 30 times’ before I buy it.
Which means, I have to wear these leggings more often and not just for “special occasions” (but again, what special occasions require leggings?!?)
So I challenged myself to come up with 3 looks for the leggings: an everyday look, casual and dressier.
Look 1: Out for dinner
Normally if I wanted to look more dressed up, I’d pull out heels, but there’s something to be said about an embellished flat. I paired the leggings with the Manolo Blahnik Hangisi Flats, a soft yet luxurious sweater with an open back from Oak + Fort and some blingey accessories. An easy look to go out for dinner or the theatre. Whenever we are allowed to do that again.
Look 2: Casual
Apple picking you say? Or maybe heading to a pumpkin patch? So why not make it ‘fash-un’. A cardigan and ankle boots paired together make leather pants more casual, yet put together.
Look 3: Everyday Casual
There’s a story behind pairing these leggings with an oversized hoodie and sneakers. I remember picking my daughter up from school one day and seeing a mom at the playground. She was wearing leather leggings, a sweater and sneakers. She looked chic and I thought, well, why not? Why not get more wear out of an item of clothing and wear it more often in my regular life.
Here’s my honest review of the Aritzia Daria legging: MEH. They are buttery soft, and they’ve held up well, but they stretch around the waist area and don’t have that snug, locked and loaded feeling which I prefer with leggings. There are lots of other options for leather pants out there, check my shop my looks below.
