Jackets and winter coats can be such amazing layering pieces that add an important final touch to any look. But how many winter coats are too many? I’m asking for a friend, who may have the same name as me and may look freakishly the same too. But winter coats are essential to survive Canadian winters but to also be stylish. After all, no one needs to know that that under your stylish winter coat you are wearing your pjs without a bra, do they?
Today I am sharing the 5 winter coats you need to survive winter -stylishly of course!
Puffer Coat
Also know as the Parka, it’s basically the biggest, warmest, most Canadian wintery kind of coat you can think of. There are so many options, maybe too many, but nonetheless, it’s the one that we look to wearing the most. The one I have and rely on most in the winter is a Duvet Coat from Lululemon from a previous season. Look for: One that is warm but also lightweight There’s nothing worse than having a heavy coat and feeling like you’ve been working out while trying to keep warm.

Car Coat
We live in the day and age of the car, where frankly we spend more time driving around than walking outside, especially when it’s chilly. A classic car coat is pretty much an essential that will take you from Fall through Winter into Spring. It hits about mid-thigh, so it’s easy to sit in when in the car – hence the name! Look for: a classic colour, like black in a wool and one that is roomy that allows for layering

Tailored Coat
A Classic, tailored coat is just that: a classic. It is timeless and can make any outfit, including a t-shirt and jeans look polished. A trench coat falls under this category as well. Look for one that is belted, perhaps double breasted and also one that is lined which adds a special touch. I am obsessed with the Max Mara’s Manuela Coat, but alas, it isn’t in the budget right now.

Oversized Robe Coat
There is nothing more glamorous than an oversized robe coat. Think of the above classic tailored coat and then make it oversized with a drop shoulder and lots of room. There are so many ways to have fun with this style of coat and to add some glitz and glamour to your winter wear. Look for a thin but warm fabric, such as cashmere (goals!), or a wool blend and opt for a longer length. I’d prefer one that was almost floor length, but with my tall frame, that’s harder to find.

A Trendy Coat: Sherpa
All of my above picks are classic and necessary for an essential coat wardrobe, but there’s always rooms to have fun with your outerwear too while staying warm. In recent years the Teddy Coat or Sherpa coat has been popular, and it is a warm and fuzzy option to add to your coat collection! Look for: whatever speaks to you and doesn’t break the budget! This year’s trend is the “Shacket”
